The number moved again, and this time it moved down

The number moved again overnight. Most people will never see it. Yesterday the Ledger closed at $40,582,274,254,843.57 on the October 27 close. Today the October 28 close reads $40,551,054,852,362.41, a fall of $31,219,402,481.16 in one day. A down day is the line in the Treasury release the headlines skipped: the daily ritual does not only count up, and the streak of daily closes now includes a step back from the high set the day before.

The longer pace still points the other way. From the September 30, 2026 fiscal year end close of $40,171,825,101,340.31, the debt rose by $379,229,751,022 in 28 days, an average of about $13,543,919,679 per day so far this month. Over the 64 days ending October 28 in the Ledger snapshot window starting August 25, the pace was about $7,065,479,646 per day, or about $81,776 per second, with debt per resident rising by about $20.61 per day on that average. One down day changes the total. It does not change the average yet. Followers get the number, every morning, in this Brief.

A cash outflow day, and the countdown underneath

The Daily Treasury Statement for October 28 recorded $18,463,000,000 in deposits and $55,361,000,000 in withdrawals, so withdrawals finished the day ahead by $36,898,000,000. It was a far lighter deposit day than October 27, when deposits were $321,642,000,000 and withdrawals were $289,813,000,000. Deposits are the cash coming into the Treasury General Account, mainly tax receipts and proceeds from selling Treasury securities. Withdrawals are the cash going out, mainly benefit payments, payroll, interest, and payments to contractors and states. A day when withdrawals top deposits can still be a day when the debt total falls, because the debt also moves with the timing of security settlements and redemptions.

The countdown underneath the daily move is simple subtraction: $448,945,147,638 stands between the October 28 total and 41 trillion dollars, about 64 days at the 64 day average pace of $7,065,479,646 per day, and about 33 days if the faster October pace holds. The next close is the next number in the streak, and the Ledger will publish it in full as soon as the Treasury posts it. Tonight the next Brief carries that close.

Sources and methodology

Methodology. Daily cash figures are from the U.S. Treasury’s Daily Treasury Statement (DTS) for September 28, 2026, the government’s official daily cash-flow report. The DTS records money actually moving in and out of Treasury accounts; it is not the same as the budget deficit, which is measured monthly on an accrual-adjusted basis.
